Iris Williams
A Romantic Musical
Journey
Metropolitan Room
New York, NY
Veteran performer Iris Williams cuts a classy, stylish figure on the
bandstand. She understands the intimacy of cabaret; she looks into
the eyes of her audience, often engaging individuals. The artist is
extremely personable.
Highlights of this show included bright, swingy versions of “Like
Someone in Love,” featuringTom Hubbard’s excellent bass and Jeff
Brillinger’s percussive brush work, and “Beginning to See the Light,”
in similar open, infectiously happy mode. Both featured appealing
jazz modulation. The iconic “Sophisticated Lady” was skillfully
phrased and effectively smooth. Two classic Piaf songs showed off
perfect French and sweeping romanticism. These also segued
gracefully one to the other, a technique not employed elsewhere.
Williams is extremely polished.
Art Weiss served as musical director and pianist.
Iris is back at the Metropolitan Room on Sunday, October 20 at 9:30
pm.
